Sukhasana is one of the most fundamental and accessible poses in yoga. In Sanskrit, “sukha” means pleasure, comfort, or bliss, which is why it is often called the “pose of happiness.”

This is an excellent pose for meditation and the practice of pranayama (breathing techniques).

Benefits of regular practice:

  • strengthens the back muscles and improves posture

  • gently opens the hips, knees, and ankles

  • relieves tension in the body and soothes the nervous system

  • improves muscle tone and overall well-being

Practice tips: If you feel discomfort sitting on the floor, place a small cushion or yoga block under your pelvis. This will help release unnecessary tension and align the spine. You can also place bolsters under your knees, especially if your knees are higher than your hips. If it’s difficult to keep your back straight, practice against a wall for gentle support.

Special benefits for women: Sukhasana is recommended during pregnancy, as it gently opens the hips, provides physiological preparation for childbirth, and helps harmonize the hormonal balance.
