In Ayurveda, there’s a remarkable procedure called Nabhi-Basti — oiling the navel area.
In Ayurvedic tradition, the navel is considered a key energetic center: here lies Nabhi-Marama — a point directly linked to digestion, the reproductive system, nervous regulation, and even emotional balance due to its abundance of nerve endings. Through it, in the mother’s womb, we received nourishment, warmth, and connection to the outside world.
Using various oils, you can gently boost metabolism and digestion, hydrate the skin from within, improve sleep quality, add shine to hair, reduce eye dryness and fatigue, and support immunity.
Classic Ayurvedic oils include sesame, almond, coconut, and of course, ghee.
Sesame oil — warming, grounding, deeply nourishing. Ideal for those feeling internal “dryness” — anxiety, exhaustion, brittle hair. It’s one of the best oils for balancing Vata dosha (air + ether): it supports the nervous system, enhances sleep, strengthens bones and joints, gently stimulates lymphatic detox, and positively influences hormonal balance during stress-related depletion.
Coconut oil — cooling, soothing, with strong antibacterial properties. Perfect for summer, overheating, inflammation, or sensitive, irritated skin; especially beneficial for Pitta (fire + water). It deeply nourishes the skin, making it more elastic and radiant, while supporting healthy metabolism and thyroid function. Use it cautiously or avoid it altogether in cold weather.
Almond oil — gentle, lightweight, rich in vitamin E. It hydrates skin at a deep level, even if dryness isn’t visible externally. It calms the nervous system, eases insomnia, anxious thoughts, and mood swings. It supports the liver and thus natural estrogen detoxification, positively impacting hormonal balance and skin health.
Ghee (clarified butter) — one of the most penetrating and versatile oils in Ayurveda. Free of dairy proteins and water, it easily passes through tissues to deliver nourishment deep inside. It enhances Agni — digestive fire, essential for nutrient absorption and stable hormonal regulation. It nourishes tissues from bones to the reproductive system and is especially helpful during exhaustion or recovery from illness.
Before the procedure, gently clean the navel area. Warm the oil slightly, apply a few drops to the center of the navel, and massage softly: several circles clockwise and several counterclockwise, for about 5 minutes. Use only high-quality, tested oils.
